Careers in Cosmetology

Cosmetology can be defined as the study and application of beauty treatment. It is a part of medical science wherein the person, referred to as a cosmetologist, uses various types of treatments and equipments to improve the physical appearance of a person, by bringing in some modifications in the body parts, skin, or hair. A cosmetologist can be a hair stylist, shampoo technician, manicurist, esthetician, beauty therapist, nail technician, or an electrologist. People, especially in the fashion industry, have become conscious about their physical appearance. This has resulted in an increase in the demand for cosmetologists. Consequently, people who have completed graduation (usually MBBS or equivalent) opt cosmetology as their specialty and thus, build a career in this field. Courses offered in the field of cosmetology are designed to train students in personal grooming, beauty therapies, beauty treatments, and different methods of naturopathy.

Course Details
Cosmetology is usually included in the curriculum of final year of MBBS course. Apart from this, certain institutes dedicated to beauty treatment courses also offer courses in the field of cosmetology, usually at the diploma level, which can be pursued after graduation or completion of 10+2.

Career Prospects
Cosmetology has become one of the most prospering career options in India and abroad. After pursuing a relevant course, aspirants can join cosmetic companies or the beauty industry and work as cosmetologists in beauty saloons, spas, resorts luxury hotels. Furthermore, they can become instructors in health clubs or specialists in cosmetology institutes and impart knowledge in hair styling, aesthetics, manicure, and pedicure, electrolysis, etc. to budding cosmetologists. With experience and capital, one can start his/her own clinic for consultation.

Top Colleges Offering UG/PG/Other Courses
Apart from MBBS colleges, certain institutes offer training in cosmetology through advanced diploma courses. One such prominent institute is VLCC (located in major cities of India including Delhi and Mumbai), which offers long-term diploma and advance diploma courses in cosmetology. Other institutes in India are: Institute of Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, Mumbai; and LTA School of Beauty, Mumbai.

Remuneration
Pay packages in the field of cosmetology vary from one organization to another and depend upon an individual's experience. As a beginner, one can earn around Rs. 3000 to Rs. 8000 per month. On the other hand, experienced cosmetologists can earn up to Rs. 1000 or even higher per visit. Also, the remuneration largely depends upon the nature of the treatment given to the client.
