St. Xavier's College Calcutta is named after St. Francis Xavier, a saint of the 16th century. It is one of the most esteemed educational institutions of present-day Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal (India). The college is affiliated to Calcutta University, IGNOU and DOEAC, to conduct their respective courses. St. Xavier’s College has the prestige of being the first autonomous college of West Bengal. It offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of arts, science, commerce, business administration and management. The college aims at the formation of today's youth by helping them to become men and women of character, and inspiring them to succeed in every field.

St. Xavier’s College Calcutta came into existence on January 16, 1860, when it was founded by the Society of Jesus or the Jesuits, under the leadership of Father Depelchin. The college started its operations in a very humble way, with just about 40 students spread over three classes. In 1862, two years after it was founded, it gained affiliation from Calcutta University. The B.Ed courses were also introduced in 1940s, while the B.Com courses were introduced in 1946. With the passing time, all the departments of the college became co-educational, except for the B.Com department.

St. Xavier’s College Kolkata has a computer center, which was added in 1985. The college entered into its first ever tie-up with a foreign University, the University of Manitoba, on February 4, 2008. Students from all over India, with different cultural and religious backgrounds, live in complete harmony and peace at the hostel facilities of the college. It offers all the basic amenities with state-of-the-art infrastructure within its campus, for the smooth conduct of the courses. St. Xavier’s College Calcutta, which was started as a pure arts college, is today one of the top commerce colleges in India.
