A career in petroleum engineering is one of lucrative option in India. Education through various courses has opened up opportunities for petroleum engineers in India.

Careers in Petroleum Engineering

Petroleum engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the study of techniques and methods to extract petroleum and natural gas. The field is not confined to extraction. It also involves the study of purification, manufacture and utilization of oil, gas, and liquefiable hydrocarbons to its best. Factories, automobiles, and even household consume the non-renewable fuels in large quantity, therefore search and exploitation of new oil sources from even complex geographical location is quiet necessary.

A petroleum engineer has to deal with different aspects of the field, including exploration of new sources, assessment of the natural characteristics, and production of machines in order to extract and process crude oil. The job of proper exploitation and refining of petroleum comes under the purview of a petroleum engineer. He/she needs to have abilities to work and coordinate in a team, as he/she has to work with geologists, analysts, geophysicists, safety, engineers, environmental / regulatory specialists etc. The profession requires dedication, commitment and devotion.

Course Details
Petroleum engineering is offered at undergraduate as well as post graduate levels, by engineering colleges. Minimum qualification for under graduate program is 10+2 in science stream. For post graduate program in the field, the minimum requirement is B.E/B. Tech degree in the relevant subject. The candidates, who have passed M. Sc in chemistry, are also eligible. Various institutions offer education in specific aspect of petroleum engineering, such as petroleum refining and petrochemicals, petroleum exploration and production and mechanical or petroleum science.

Career Prospects
Considering the significance of petrol, oil and gas in our daily life, there is a great demand of efficient petroleum engineers. Petroleum engineers are generally hired in the places where the availability of oil and gas is the highest. Numerous vacancies are there in public and private sector, for petroleum engineers.
