Electrical engineering is among the popular career options in India. Education through various courses has opened up opportunities for skilled electrical engineers.

Careers in Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the study of diverse utilization of electricity and equipments that generate and distribute power. This branch of engineering includes detailed study of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. Conventional areas like generation, allocation, distribution and transmission of electricity come under the purview of electrical engineering. An electrical engineer is expected to have detailed knowledge of electrical networks, electrical energy converters and equipments that uses electromagnetic field theory, electrical energy distribution systems etc. The job requires lot of hard work, patience and thorough knowledge. An electrical engineer should update his/her knowledge regularly. The person should have analytical and logical skills along with dedication and commitment towards the profession.

Course Details
Electrical engineering is taught all over India through engineering colleges that offer degree programs in this branch, at under graduate as well as at post graduate level. Minimum qualification to seek admission to under graduate programs is 10+2 in science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English), while for post graduate programs, one should have done B.E/B. Tech in electrical engineering. The program can either be studied alone or can be combined with electronic engineering. One can even opt for super specialty or Ph. D program in electrical engineering. For the purpose, the person should have done M.E in electrical engineering or electrical & electronic engineering.

Career Prospects
Engineers who have done their graduation/post graduation in electrical engineering are employed in almost every sector of the economy. They can opt for a career in computers, communications, robotics, electronics, biomedical electronics and signal processing, transportation, industrial process control, energy operation and distribution and electro-mechanical energy conversion. Both public and private sector enterprises hire qualified and skilled electrical engineers. Even government organizations belonging to different streams, atomic power plants, hydroelectric power plants as well as thermal power plants absorb proficient electrical engineers.

Top Colleges Offering UG/PG/Other Courses
Electrical engineering is one of the popular career options among the science scholars of India. Several institutes all over India offer under graduate as well as post graduate programs in this field of electrical engineering. Some of the prominent institutes are Jorhat Engineering College, (Assam), University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, (Karnataka), SV Engineering College, (Andhra Pradesh), Nirma Institute of Technology, (Gujarat), Lingaya's Institute of Technology, (Haryana), IITT College of Engineering, (Himachal Pradesh), MBS College of Engineering and Technology, (Jammu and Kashmir), Bokaro Institute of Technology, (Jharkhand), MVJ College of Engineering, (Karnataka), MES College of Engineering, (Kerala), Maulana Azad College of Technology, (Madhya Pradesh), and KJ Somaiya College of Engineering, (Maharashtra).

Remuneration
Electrical engineering fetches a good remuneration to its scholars. A beginner can earn a salary between Rs. 35000-Rs40000 per month. Experience, higher qualification and capabilities of an electrical engineer add to the remuneration.
