Presidency College Chennai

The Presidency College, Chennai, was founded by Sir Eyre Burton Powell in the year 1840. The Presidency College was affiliated to University of Madras in the year 1857. The college got autonomy in 1987. The college has also been accredited with four stars by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The Presidency College is a Government institution and hence, it is under the control of Government of Tamil Nadu.
 
The history of Presidency College Chennai can be traced back to 1840, when a preparatory school was opened on 15th October, 1840, in a rented building in Egmore, which was called ‘Edinburgh Home’. The preparatory school was shifted to Popham's Broadway, in the year 1841. The institution later went on to become them Presidency College. The Presidency College took about three years to build and after it was completed, the opening ceremony was performed by his Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh on 25th March, 1870.
 

The present day Presidency College started its operations in the year 1911, when it started offering Honors courses in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Sanskrit, and History. It also started conducting M.A. degree courses as well. The Presidency College holds the distinction of being the first college to undertake the Honors and post graduate courses in the study of Arts. The development of the Science subjects came into being not before the year 1931, when the Bachelor of Science course was started.

Eligibility:

Undergraduate:
Admissions to the Bachelor's Degree programs are open to students who have successfully completed their Class XIIth examinations. An admission to the Bachelor’s degree programs is based on the performance of the student.

Post Graduate:
For admissions to the Master's Degree programs, the student must have completed his/her Bachelor's Degree program in the same field in which they want to pursue Masters.

Doctorate:
For admission to the Ph.D courses, the student must have a prior M.Phil degree in the subject in which they plan to pursue the Ph.D course.
Admission Procedure:

Candidates are selected on the basis of the marks obtained by them in the qualifying examination. Admission is subject to the reservation policy adopted by the college.
