Tamil University

Tamil University was established for providing higher educational facilities in Tamil Language and its allied branches. The University's motto is to preserve the Tamil language, which is known for its antiquity, richness of vocabulary and great classical literature. The University is housed at Thanjavur, the ancient capital of the Chola Dynasty of India.
 
Educational Streams
Tamil University provides higher education and research facilities for the study of Tamil Language and other allied branches by offering courses like MA, M Sc, Diploma, Certificate as well as Doctorate. It is a unitary type of university that aims to provide higher research in Tamilology and advanced study in several disciplines such as Linguistics, Translation, Lexicography, Music, Drama and Manuscriptology. 

A research-oriented University, it introduced academic research by offering M Phil and Ph D programmes in the year 1992 for a few disciplines such as Language, Literature, Translation, Sculpture, History and Architecture. The University has recently collaborated with the Kundrakudi Thiruvannamalai Adheenam Trust, offering more educational facilities to the students coming to the University for education.
 
 Facilities
Tamil University's campus offers many facilities in the form of library, women's hostel, boy's hostel, guest house and an open air theatre. The University library has a rich collection of books and journals. Focus of the library is on collecting and preserving old and rare books. It has also made provisions for lingua-phone records, audiocassettes, videocassettes and CD's for reference. There is a well-designed and carefully planned museum, which contains different materials related to Tamil culture.
 
History
Tamil University came into being with Tamil University Act, passed unanimously by the Tamil Nadu State Assembly. It started functioning from the second week of September 1981, onwards. The then chief minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. M.G. Ramachandran, is credited for the establishment of the Tamil University at Thanjavur.
