Sikkim University

Sikkim University is located in a very peaceful, accessible and naturally magnificent surrounding of Sikkim, contributing substantively to the nation building process by mobilizing the rich intellectual heritage of this region. Established and fully funded by the Government of India under an Act of Parliament, it is a central university. The educational jurisdiction of the University extends the entire state of Sikkim.
 
Educational Streams
Being a central University, Sikkim University has plans to establish three distinct yet interdisciplinary academic programmes consisting of Traditional Programmes, Non-traditional Programmes and Policy Studies Programmes. The University offers traditional courses in Humanities and Life Sciences along with non-traditional courses which are unique and related to the state including subjects like ethnic history, mountain studies, border studies and hill music and culture. University is on the Post Graduate and Research Programmes.
 
Facilities
Recognizing the role of sports in the development of a person, the university encourages students to take part in sports competitions. Co-curricular activities are regularly held in the premises. The students can have their food and snacks in the canteen. The library has contemporary academic and general books, publications, reports and other documents in science, technology, arts, humanities and other disciplines.
 
History
Sikkim University was established under Sikkim University Act, 2006. In July 2008, the University started functioning. The campus of the University is expected to be built at Yangang in South Sikkim district of Sikkim. The first Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University is Professor Mahendra P. Lama.
