SNDT Women's University

Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women's University has been recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited with a Five Star Status by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The University offers quality education and has gained recognition as a symbol of excellence in higher educational opportunities for women. SNDT University has its educational jurisdiction spread across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Haryana and Daman. The special provisions of Maharashtra University Act 1994 empowers SNDT University to affiliate any College/Institution without any objection from the local University
 
Educational Streams
SNDT University conducts various courses in several disciplines. The medium of instruction for study in the colleges affiliated by SNDT University is in multiple languages like Marathi, Gujarati, Hindi and English. The University offers courses in conventional method as well as distance learning mode. It has played a remarkable role in taking education to the villages. Centre for Rural Development is an attempt to make higher education responsive to the needs of the community. The university is running several projects for community development too. It recognizes the importance of adult and continuing education. The university also imparts distance education to the students.
 
Facilities
SNDT University provides all basic facilities to the students such as hostel accommodation, regular health check-ups, canteen, etc. Doctors are appointed by the University for conducting regular health check-ups of the students. The university has established Fitness Centre Gymkhana Hall and Yoga Centre to ensure overall development of the students. The Department of Students’ Welfare at the University conducts various departmental, co-curricular and extra curricular activities for the students of the affiliated colleges. There is a University Library that supports the teaching, research and extension activities of the University by providing to students, faculty and staff, information and documentary resources and services.
 
History
In 1896 Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve established an ashram for widows and helpless women at Hingne near Pune to mark the beginning of a new era in the history of women’s education in India. Finally in 1916 the first college was which gradually took shape of a women’s university. In 1920 the University was named as Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University after the great benefactor’s mother Nathibai.
