Periyar Maniammai University (PMU), Thanjavur, is a prestigious university with a proven record of academic excellence in all its programmes. Educational Streams
Periyar Maniammai University offers regular courses on several disciplines through direct coaching and distance learning mode. A Centre for Political Science provides offers Five years integrated M.A programmes in Political Science, Public Administration and Social Work besides facilitating research work of scholars for M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. The university inculcates a spirit of scientific enquiry, analytical skill and scholastically excellent. Centre for Periyar Thought (CPT) is also located in the university. Centre for Students and Administrative Services (CSAS) conducts awareness programme on IAS, IPS and other UPSC examinations. Under its Distance Education program, the university conducts various service-oriented programmes for educationally disadvantaged section of the society. The Centre for Open and Distance Education (COADE) has three Regional Centres at Trichy, Chennai and New Delhi.

History
On 17th August, 2007 Periyar Maniammai University was upgraded from College to University. PMU was originally Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women established in the year 1988 as an exclusive engineering college for women in Vallam-Thanjavur. The college was founded by Thanthai Periyara, a social revolutionary and a very great thinker had been emphasizing the importance of education all through his life.
