National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, among the most prestigious institutes in pharmaceutical sciences, is popularly known as NIPER Mohali. It has been declared as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The institute is an autonomous entity set up under the aegis of Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India. NIPER is a member of Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities.
Educational Streams
NIPER offers MBA (Pharm) / M.Pharm / MS (Pharm), M Tech (Pharm), and Doctoral programs. Education is based on credit system and each course has a fix number of credits that describes its weightage. The course length of Masters Programs is four semesters, while the doctoral programs take six to ten semesters. Attending every lecture and practical class is compulsory. For admission in Masters programs, students have to get through a written test, as well as a group discussion and interview. Applicants for PhD programs have to get past a written test and interview. 5% of total number of seats in all programmes are available for applicants sponsored by Public/Private sector undertakings, Government departments, Research and Development organizations.

History
National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research or NIPER was developed as a center of excellence in imparting higher education, research and development in pharmaceutical sciences. It was declared as an institute of national importance through an Act of parliament in 1998. NIPER was established at SAS Nagar in Mohali, Punjab by the Government of India to cater to the long-standing demand for setting up a dedicated nodal for quality higher education and advanced research in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
