Mumbai University

University of Mumbai is a state university situated in Maharashtra, accredited with a five-star ranking by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The educational jurisdiction of Mumbai University is spread across the districts of Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. Originally known as University of Bombay, it is among the most prestigious universities in India.
 
Educational Streams
The University of Mumbai provides education at various levels by offering Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees to students. It has established affiliations with several high ranking research institutes on the world, including Institute of Chemical Technology (formerly UDCT), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), and the Tata Memorial Hospital. The University is running more than 10 self-supporting courses at present. It has several campuses across Mumbai, namely Fort Campus, Kalina Campus and Ratnagiri Campus. The original campus at Fort houses the administrative division. Kalina Campus, located on 230 acres of land, has on-campus graduate training and research centers. Ratnagiri is a minor campus running mostly extramural courses.
 
Facilities
The University of Mumbai provides all the basic facilities to its students including a large International students Hostel for foreign students. The library of the University, situated on Campus, caters to the needs of students, scholars, faculty of all the departments. It has a offers a vast collection of books, periodicals and other material, documents and Scientific Journals, Thesis, Encyclopedias, microfilms and rare manuscripts, IMF reports, census records and access to several hundreds of E-Journals through online subscription.
 
History
After Independence the University of Mumbai was established re-organization of the functions and powers of the University with the passing of the Bombay University Act of 1953. On 4 September 1996, the name of the University was changed from University of Bombay to University of Mumbai according to a Government Gazette. The name of the University is either abbreviated as (UoM) for University of Mumbai or as (MU) for Mumbai University.
