Jamia Millia Islamia has grown from a small institution in the pre-independence India to a central university located in New Delhi offering quality education in wide array of disciplines. It is not an affiliating university and no college anywhere is affiliated to it. In Urdu language, Jamia means University, and Millia means National. So it could be translated as National Islamic University.
 
Educational Streams
Jamia Millia Islamia has been offering courses in a multitude of disciplines. Besides the regular faculties, JMI has a number of centres for learning and research like Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC), Academy of Third World Studies (ATWS) etc. The University is also marching ahead in the field of Information Technology (IT). Various undergraduate and postgraduate courses are being offered in the IT department. Besides this the University has a campus wide network which connects a large number of its departments and offices. The university is famous for its Mass Communication courses and several renowned faces in this field have trained themselves in Jamia.
 
Facilities
Jamia Millia Islamia provides separate hostels for boys and girls with limited number of seats. Besides this there is one Working Women's Hostel as well. The university has established separate libraries for the faculties and a separate central library. The library also houses books on Turkey and Bibliography on Haj.
Provision of basic facilities like Auditorium & Guest House is there. The University promotes co-curricular activities among the students through the subject associations of the departments that regularly organize academic activities such as student's seminars, extension lectures, debating competitions etc. National Cadet Core (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS) activities on the campus are also offered on the campus for promoting sports and games among the student.
 
History
Jamia Millia Islamia was originally established at Aligarh in United Provinces, India in the year 1920. It became a Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988 by a Special Act of the Parliament.
