Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University is situated in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. It is the first University of its kind in Asia conducting extension education and research in horticulture and forestry. The university has been named after Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar, the architect of Himachal Pradesh and visionary of horticulture and forestry university for the state of Himachal Pradesh.
 
Educational Streams
Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry university offers UG (B Sc), PG (M Sc) and Doctorate (Ph D) courses in the fields of Horticulture, Forestry and allied sciences. Supportve managerial degrees like MBA in Agri-Business are also offered. The courses have been designed keeping in mind the hilly terrain of Himachal Pradesh. The curriculum is based on the recommendations of the Dean's Committee Reports of the ICAR and Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE). The university follows course credit system under bifurcation of annual academic session into two semesters.
 
Each semester is spread over duration of 19 weeks along with short duration semester breaks of six weeks each. Educational tours and field trainings are organized during semester breaks to expose students to different farming situations. The complete teaching spectrum has been divided into a number of courses offered by departments under colleges of horticulture and forestry. 

National Education Policy is implemented for admission to the under-graduate programmes (B Sc in Horticulture / Forestry). Admission is based upon entrance test. The test is open for all successful students of 10+2 examination. A minimum of 15 per cent seats at under-graduate level are reserved for students of other States who are nominated by the ICAR on the basis of all India entrance examination and 25 per cent seats at post-graduate level also are reserved for candidates from other states.
 
Facilities
Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry has residential, sports, cultural/co-curricular activities, NCC/NSS and medical care arrangements for the students. There is a placement cell for career counseling. A large playground and an international gymnasium are available in the university campus. The students can also avail of canteen, shopping centre, banks, and transportation services.
 
History
The University is the developed form of Himachal Agricultural College and Research Institute, Solan established in 1962 with affiliation to Punjab University, Chandigarh. In 1985 this university was rechristened Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan named after Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar, the architect of Himachal Pradesh.
