Bhatkhande Music Institute University

Bhatkhande Music Institute University or BMIU Lucknow, an esteemed study center of Indian traditional music, exists under University Grant Commission Act 1956 in 2000 as a deemed university. The Government of India by a notification on 24th October, 2000, declared this institute a University, thus elevating its status and making it only-of-its-kind music university in India. It is registered under the registration of Societies Act 1860 as an autonomous institution. 
 
Educational Streams
Bhatkhande Music Institute comprises two sections. First a University section in which two years Pre-Graduate, three years Graduate, Two years Post- graduate courses and PhD Studies are conducted. Second section is that of two years Diploma courses comprising of Praveshika, Parichay, Prabuddha and Parangat titles. The subjects taught are grouped in four faculties viz Vocal, Melody, Instrumental and Dance, which are further spread in Classical, Semi-Classical and Light Vocal (Gayan), Swaravadya and Talavadya in Instrumental (Vadan) and Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Manipuri and Folk in Dance (Nritya) departments.
 
Facilities
There is a girl's hostel on the campus. Some rooms are earmarked for couple students from abroad. BMIU Lucknow maintains an audio-video library and modern sound recording studio which is a center of sound related technological studies, along with catering to Institute's recording needs.
 
History
BMIU Lucknow is the developed form of a music school in Lucknow established by Pt Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande in 1926 with the help and co-operation of Rai Umanath Bali and Rai Rajeshwar Bali and other music patrons and connoisseurs of Lucknow, culturally vibrant princely state of Awadh. This institution was inaugurated by the then Governor of Awadh Sir William Marris and was named after him as Marris Colloege of Music. In 1966, the State Government of Uttar Pradesh brought this college under its control and aptly renamed it after its founder as Bhatkhande College of Hindustani Music.
