Avinashilingam University for Women

Avinashilingam University for Women is located at Coimbatore in the state of Tamil Nadu. It  was declared a Deemed University by the Government of India under Section 3 of the UGC Act in June 1988. It is one of the largest institutions in the country imparting Home Science education at all levels. It was the first women's college to be conferred the status of autonomous by the University of Madras in June 1978. The status of Autonomy gave the College scope for academic freedom for innovations in teaching and research. It was previously known as Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women.
 
Educational Streams
Avinashilingam University for Women conducts higher education and research in different disciplines - home sciences, sciences, humanities, education, engineering and management up to the level of Ph.D. Vocational courses are offered in Catering Management and Tourism. Adding local element to the music, it conducts courses in Tamil and Music. 

Education is also imparted in new age disciplines like Interior Design, Human Rights, Hospitality Management & Dietetics, Textiles and Apparel Designing, and Computer Applications.  A 5 Year Integrated course is conducted in Special Education and Rehabilitation and Mathematics. 

Double major courses are conducted in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Food Science & Nutrition, Food Quality Control, Rural Development and Sociology. Paramedical degree courses are offered in Emergency and Trauma Care Management and Physician Assistance.
 
Facilities
The university hosts six hostels for its students, namely Kalaimagal Illam, Thirumagal Illam , Malaimagal Illam, Malarmagal Illam , Arpana Illam and Sarada Illam with modern amenities and conveniences. Other available facilities are Canteen, Auditorium, Sports, and Medical Centre. A well-maintained library supports the students in their studies.
 
History
In the year 1957, Avinashilingam Home Science College for Women was established by the great patriot and educationist Dr TS Avinashilingam. It was founded under the aegis of the Avinashilingam Education Trust. The college grew steadily and earned the status of deemed university in June, 1988.
