North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) Shillong (Meghalaya) was established in 1987, in accordance with the Meghalaya Registration of Societies Act 1983. The college boasts of being third educational institution in India established by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. NEIGRIHMS Shillong holds the distinction of being the first and the only medical college that offers postgraduate courses, in the entire northeastern region of India.
 
In the year 2000, North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences or NEIGRIHMS Shillong was declared as a National institute. Currently, all the functions of the institute have been managed by the PMO. The college is spread across 306 acres of land. It has been recognized by the Indian Nursing Council.
