Vidyasagar University

Vidyasagar University, located in Midnapore district of West Bengal, was established with a mission to fulfill the higher mainstream education needs of the region. The University has been named after Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, one of the most illustrious sons of Bengal, The University has been awarded with 3-star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

 

Presently Vidyasagar University houses PG departments, Humanities and Science while undergraduate colleges are affiliated to it.  Vocational subjects and other specialized courses are also offered at the UG level. MBA is run under the Department of Commerce with Farm Management. Distance learning department of the University offers Post graduate courses as well as one year Bridge Course in five Arts & Commerce Subjects as well as two Science subjects, namely Botany & Forestry as well as Physics and Techno Physics.

Vidyasagar University provides hostel facility for girls and boys respectively. The Medical Unit offers medical advice and help to the students, teachers, administrative and non teaching staff of the University. Sports activities are also encouraged at the campus. University Sports Authority and Midnapore District Sports Development Academy encourages and guides sports activities in the campus. The University also houses a University Scientific Instrumentation Centre (USIC) to provide instrumental facilities. An automated library provides learning resource, and fulfills intellectual requirements of the students, faculty, and researchers.

On 29th September, 1981, Vidyasagar University was established. It has been named after the Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, the great educationist and social reformer of Bengal. On 18th July 1983, the foundation stone of the main campus was laid by the then Honorable Chancellor of the University and Governor of West Bengal, Late B.D.Pande. It was inaugurated by Shri Jyoti Basu, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal on 15th January 1986.
