Tilak Maharashtra University

Tilak Maharashtra University, also known as Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, is one of the oldest universities in India. It was established in 1921 at Pune and imparted national education amongst the youths during the pre-independence era. Even after independence, Tilak Maharashtra University catered to the needs of the changing society. Recognising the contribution of the University in the fields of Sanskrit, Ayurveda, Social Sciences and Distance Education, the University was awarded the status of a Deemed University in the year of 1987.
 
Educational Streams
Tilak Maharashtra University has played an important role in spreading education amongst the youth in a wide range of disciplines. Through distance education mode, career-oriented courses in Computer Application, Business Administration, Hotel Management, Journalism and Social Work are offered to the aspiring candidates. 

As for admission, candidates form India as well as from foreign countries can get admission to the courses of the university. The university provides for all important facilities and training to research students. Students can pursue research in Social Work and Social Sciences, Linguistics, Management, Journalism, Mass Media, Performing Arts, Ayurveda, Library Science, Geography, Philosophy and Interdisciplinary subjects as well. Separate faculties have been set up for courses like Computer Application and Ayurveda.
 
Facilities
The university provides separate hostels for both girls and boys. Library facility with large number of books and journals is at the disposal of students. Laboratories with up-to-date machinery and instruments are available to students. Placement cell plays a role in finding job opportunities for the students who have completed their studies.
 
History
Tilak Maharashtra University was established in 1921 in the memory of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, one of the greatest freedom fighters of India and an advocate of national education. The university was established to promote national education conceived by Lokmanya Tilak in his four-fold formula (other three were Swaraj, Swadeshi and Boycott). In 1985, the Department of Distance Education (initially known as Mukta Vidya Kendra) was established at the university.
