Located at Vellore in Tamil Nadu, Thiruvalluvar University was established by the state government to take the fruits of higher education to the masses. The university campus is located in Vellore Fort, which is the perfect specimen of the military architecture in South India. Previously a Post Graduation Extension Centre of the University of Madras was functioning here. Later it was extended as a University.
Educational Streams
All departments of Thiruvalluvar University offer post-graduation and research programs. Department of Economics offers specialization research in areas of Agriculture, Industry and Health Economics. Department of Zoology conducts research in Sericulture, Aquaculture, Pollution studies and Bio-diversity. The University is working to add more courses to its curriculum like Tamil, English, Medical Physics, Material Science, Biotechnology, Marine Sciences, Mathematics, Business Studies and Ambedkar Studies. Faculties of the University have participated in many national and international Seminars/ Conferences/ Workshops and presented research papers.
Facilities
Thiruvalluvar University provide all requisite facilities for pursuing research and teaching activities. It maintains a University library that takes care of the educational needs of students and faculties of the University. Attention is paid to the physical development of the students and they are encouraged to participate in various level competitions in outdoor and indoor sports.
History
Thiruvalluvar University was established under the Thiruvalluvar University Act 2002, (Tamil Nadu Act 32 of 2002) by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 16 October 2002, . It was started to fulfill the motto of empowering the society with higher educational facilities. It has been named after Thiruvalluvar, the great sage of Tamil Nadu.
