Osmania University, also known as OU Hyderabad, is a public university, funded and managed by the government. Located in the city of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, Osmania University is one of the oldest modern universities in India. It is among the largest university systems in the subcontinent, particularly well known for its Engineering and Technology departments. The University has been accredited with an A grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Osmania University has the credit of being the first Indian University to have an Indian language as medium of instruction (Urdu).
Osmania University conducts a wide array of courses including the academic, professional and vocational ones. Besides these, the University also conducts education in several departments through Distance Learning mode. The Institute is famous for its research activities in various fields. Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases conducts research in the fields of Clinical Genetics, Clinical Psychology and Clinical Pathology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Environmental toxicology. Centre for Energy and Technology promotes research in areas of renewable sources of energy. Other centres involved in research work are Research & Training Unit for Navigational Electronics (NERTU), Japal-Rangapur Observatory (JRO), Centre for Plant Molecular Biology (CPMB), Center for Area Studies (CAS), Regional Center for Urban And Environmental Studies (RCUES), Southern Regional Centre for the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC), and Sir Ronald Ross Institute.
Hostel accommodation is provided by Osmania University to outstation students. Currently, there are 14 hostels in the University campus. Engineering students are provided with a separate hostel accommodation close to the College of Engineering. Two hostels have been earmarked for girls. The Health Centre has been provided to offers free medical treatment to students, staff and their families. The University also hosts a post office and a branch of the State Bank of Hyderabad.
Osmania University was founded in the year 1918 by the Seventh Nizam of Hyderabad state, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan. It is the third oldest in southern India, the first to be established in the erstwhile princely State of Hyderabad and the seventh oldest institution of higher learning in India. Since its inception the University has contributed to the academic, social, and economic development of the region and the nation.
