Bharathiar University, named after the famous Tamil poet Subramania Bharathiar, is an important center of higher education at Coimbatore in the state of Tamil Nadu. Educational jurisdiction of the University is spread over the districts of Coimbatore, Erode and the Nilgiris. It is located at the foothills of Maruthamalai, in a sprawling campus at a distance of a few kilometers from Coimbatore on Maruthamalai Road. The University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with A Grade.
Bharathiar University has affiliated several institutions (Arts and Science Colleges, Colleges of Education, Management Institutions, Air Force Administration College and College of Physical Education) under its banner. Courses spanning Arts, Commerce and Science disciplines are imparted by the university. To encourage and motivate young scholars, research fellowships are offered. Students pursuing PhD programmes in the University receive fellowships from UGC, CSIR and other agencies. The University has introduced choice based credit system in the curriculum of PG courses from the academic year 2001-2002. This system was introduced to offer flexibility in the choice of courses to students. School of Distance Education (SDE), established during the academic year 1991-92, has set up more than 100 centres spread over several states as study centres-cum spot admission centres.
Bharathiar University provides hostel accommodation for girls and boys. There are separate hostels for girls (research scholars and PG students) and boys (only research scholars). All the hostels are equipped with basic and modern facilities along with attached guest rooms to accommodate the guests. Other infrastructural facilities include health centre, fitness centre, women's care centre, ST/ST welfare cell and planning and development cell. A post-office, an extension service counter of the Bank of India also functions in the premises of the University campus.
Bharathiar University was established in February 1982 and gained recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1985. It was formed out of the Postgraduate Centre of the University of Madras, functioning in Coimbatore since 1982.
