B R Ambedkar Bihar University was established in 1952 as a state university. The University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and recognized by University Grant Commission, UGC, Government of India. The university is a prestigious institution of teaching and learning in Muzaffarpur region and offers a range of full-time and part-time courses ranging from undergraduate to postgraduate and research level.

Besides contemporary courses, vocational courses are also offered by the university. Professional courses conducted by the university include courses like Computer Application, Business Administration, Industrial Microbiology, Industrial Fish and Fisheries, Industrial Chemistry, Journalism and Mass Communication, Library Sciences, Clinical Psychology, and Yogic Studies. Department of Distance Education conducts correspondence courses for those who have hitherto been unable to get regular higher education.
There is a Central Library that has a large number of reference books, theses, reports, and journals. The university library also provides internet facility. Symposia and seminars are regularly held in the university campus, ensuring maximum possible exposure for the students.
Bihar University was segregated from Patna University in 1952. In the year 1960, it was bifurcated into Bihar University, Muzaffarpur; Ranchi University, Ranchi; and Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur. In 1961, it was again bifurcated into Bihar University, Muzaffarpur and Magadh University, Bodh Gaya. In 1973, it was yet again segregated into Bihar University, Muzaffarpur and Mithila University,Darbhanga. In 1990, it was bifurcated into Bihar University, Muzaffarpur and JP University, Chapra. In 1992 it was renamed Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University.
