Anna University Coimbatore came into being in 2007 after the bifurcation of Anna University Chennai. It is an affiliating University which has brought in a number of colleges conducting graduate and post graduate courses under its umbrella. The University is particularly known for its professional courses which include more than 40 degree programs. Territorial jurisdiction of the University spreads to the districts of Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Erode, Karur, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Salem, and Nilgiris.
Anna University Coimbatore provides teaching and research facilities in higher education in the fields of Engineering, Technology, Management and allied Sciences relevant to the current and future needs of the society. Apart from promoting research activities and disseminating knowledge, it fosters co-operation between the academic and industrial communities. The University has affiliated more than 100 colleges that include government, aided, self financing and stand alone institutions.
The full time undergraduate courses offered by Anna University include B Arch (Architecture), Bachelor’s (BE) in Aeronautical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Bio-Medical Engineering, Software Engineering, Bachelor’s (B Tech) in Bio Technology, Chemical Engineering and B Sc - Information Technology. Postgraduate degree courses like Master of Business Administration (MBA) with specialization in Airline & Airport Management, Banking and Insurance Management, Master of Computer Applications (MCA), M Sc in Bio-Technology, Computer Science, Computer Technology, Network Engineering and M Tech in Real-time & Embedded System are conducted by the University.
Anna University Coimbatore was formed as a result of quadra-furcation of Anna University into four universities, namely, Anna University Chennai, Anna University Trichy, and Anna University Coimbatore and Anna University Thirunelveli. Anna University Coimbatore is an affiliating type of university established under Anna University, Coimbatore Act, 2006, by the Government of Tamilnadu.
