Acharya Nagarjuna University

Acharya Nagarjuna University, situated in Guntur, is one of the largest universities in the region. Precisely, the University is located in Nagarjuna Nagar, on the northern part of Guntur, a major centre of learning in the country. The educational jurisdiction of the University spreads across the districts of Guntur, Krishna and Prakasam affiliating more than 100 colleges. The university has been on the foundation of the university established by Acharya Nagarjuna, a great Buddhist scholar, some centuries ago.
 
Educational Streams
Presently Acharya Nagajuna University has around 40 academic departments which conduct UG, PG and research level courses on Engineering, Education, Law, Pharmacy and Oriental Languages courses. Self-financed courses are also offered by the university. 

The Humanities and Social Sciences Department of the University lays emphasis on the study of socio-economic problems of the society. Apart form the general areas, research projects also cover a study of the problems of women, the oppressed classes of the society (both social and economic) and the problems of governance. 

The Science Departments cater to the growth of scientific knowledge for solving the problems of society, like the study of pollution hazards and their prevention during development by isolating and characterizing the active principles from both floral and microbial sources, finding alternative energy sources, development of new varieties and hybrids in chilies, computer applications and software development augmenting etc.
 
Facilities
The University has well-maintained hostels for the accommodation of students. The University library is a reservoir of knowledge and has developed a comprehensive collection of documents useful for the students, faculty and research community of the University. All other necessary facilities like mess, post office etc have been arranged in the university premises.
 
History
The university has grown out of a Post-Graduate Centre of Andhra University, established in 1967 at Guntur. In 1976, the Centre gained affiliating university status. The university has been named after Acharya Nagarjuna, the pro-founder of the Madhyamaka path of Mahayana Buddhism.
