Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal is the first medical college in
the private sector in India. The college came into existence in 1953. It
started with only the pre-clinical section at Manipal and the students
had to go to Mangalore for their clinical training. Kasturba Medical
College received recognition from MCI in 1958. In 1969 with the
commencement of clinical program KMC became a full-fledged independent
college. KMC Manipal consistently ranks among the premier medical
colleges of India.
Academic Courses at KMC Manipal:
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS): Course
duration is 4 1/2 years plus 1year compulsory rotating internship. A
candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry,
Biology and English with a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry
and Biology. Admissions are done on the basis of rank in the all India
MAHE Under Graduate Entrance Test (UGET). Only candidates who have
secured minimum 50% marks in UGET are considered for admissions. A few
seats are reserved for candidates selected and sponsored by Common
Entrance Test (CET) cell, Government of Karnataka, Bangalore.
Kasturba Medical College Manipal offers a number of postgraduate
courses. These include:
MD: Anaesthesiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Community Medicine,
Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy, Forensic Medicine, General
Medicine, Hospital Administration, Microbiology, Paediatrics, Pathology.
Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychiatry, Radio-diagnosis, and
Radio-therapy.
MS: General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Opthalmology,
Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology.
PG Diploma: Anaesthesiology, Clinical Pathology, Child Health,
Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy, Obstetrics & Gynaecology,
Opthalmology, Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Psychiatry, and
Radio-diagnosis.
The duration of MD and MS courses is 3 years. For those with a
recognized diploma in the same speciality, the duration of MD and MS
courses is 2 years. The duration of all PG diploma courses is 2 years.
Candidates applying for postgraduate courses must have passed MBBS.
Admissions are made on the basis of rank obtained in the all India
ONLINE Medical Postgraduate Entrance Test (OMPET 06).
