JIPMER Pondicherry

JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research) Pondicherry is one of the premier medical colleges and hospitals in India. The origin of JIPMER can be traced to 1823 when a medical school called "Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry" was established by French government. After Pondicherry's transfer to India, Government of India took over the medical college in 1956. In 1964, the medical college was upgraded as a Regional Centre and was christened as Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).

JIPMER has an institute and a tertiary care referral hospital. The hospital is under the direct administrative control of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, while the institute is affiliated to Pondicherry University and conducts a number of medical and paramedical courses.

Academic Programs at JIPMER Pondicherry:

Undergraduate Courses: JIPMER offers M.B.B.S, B.Sc. (Medical Laboratory Technology), and B.M.R.Sc (Bachelor of Medical Record Science). Admissions to the courses are made on all India basis and strictly on the basis of merit through entrance examinations. The entrance exam for the MBBS course is conducted at Pondicherry, Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Calcutta and Tiruvananthapuram. The results are published within a week and the selection is based on the marks obtained in the entrance examination. For B.Sc. and M.Sc. courses, a common entrance examination is conducted in the Institute.

JIPMER also offers full-time Ph.D. programs in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, and Pharmacology.
