Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) came into being as College of Medical Sciences in the year 1960. At that time it had only 9 Departments of Modern Medicine. In 1971, the college was upgraded as Institute of Medical Sciences. Presently, the Institute has 33 Departments of Modern Medicine including 10 Departments of Super-specialities and 8 Departments of Ayurveda. Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU is perhaps the only institute in India, which offers courses both in the Modern Medicine and Ayurveda.

Courses at Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU:

MBBS: Course duration is 5 ½ years (including one year compulsory rotating internship training). Candidate seeking admission to MBBS course must have passed Intermediate Science/Pre-Medical Course/12 year of 10+2 or equivalent examination with a minimum of 50% marks (40% in case of SC/ST candidates) in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together. Candidate must have Completed 17 years but not crossed 25 years as on 31st December of the year of admission.

M.D. / M.S.: Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU offers M.D/M.S. in all the major specialities - Anatomy, Physiology,Biochemistry, Biophysics, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, E.N.T., Ophthalmology, General Medicine, Tuberculosis & Respiratory Diseases, Dermatology & Venereology, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Radiology, Radiotherapy, Dentistry, and Anaesthesiology. Candidates who have passed MBBS course recognized by the Medical Council of India and completed one year internship training are eligible to appear in the entrance examination.

DM / MCh: Neurosurgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Neurology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, and Endocrinology. Admission to DM / MCh courses are made through an all India competitive entrance examination conducted by the University. Candidates who have passed the MD/MS examination are eligible to appear in the entrance examination.

BAMS: Course duration is 5 ½ years (including one year compulsory rotating internship training). Eligibility for admission to BAMS is same as that of MBBS and admissions are made on the basis of an entrance exam.

MD (Ayurveda) /MS (Ayurveda): Candidates who have passed BAMS coursed recognized by CCIM and completed six months House Job (in the case of 5 years BAMS Course) or one year House Job (in the case of 4 ½ years BAMS Course) are eligible to appear in the entrance examination. Candidates who have passed MBBS course recognized by Medical Council of India and have completed one year internship training are also eligible to appear in the entrance examination for admission under supernumerary category.
