CMC Vellore's origin can be traced to 1918 when Dr.Ida Scudder established a Medical School for women. The school was upgraded to a College in 1942 and became co-educational in 1947. Every year, CMC Vellore admits 60 students to undergraduate medical course, of which at least 25 are women.

Admission to M.B.B.S. course is made on the basis of an All Indian Entrance Examination. To be eligible for admission to M.B.B.S. course, a candidate must have passed 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and English. He / she must also have secured at least 60% marks each in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (or Botany and Zoology taken together).
