Government College of Engineering Amravati is a renowned institution for higher education in technical courses. The college came into existence as a fully owned institution of the Government of Maharashtra, in 1964. The college is affiliated to Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University. With the passing time, Government College of Engineering Amravati has gained the distinction of being one of the recognized research centers in Maharashtra, for PhD programmes conducted by Amravati University.
 
Although Government College of Engineering Amravati is state-owned, it has been given the status of an autonomous institution. Currently, the college offers technical courses in five branches of engineering, along with B Tech in Computer Science and Information Technology. All the courses offered by the institution have been recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.
