Syllabus for CAT Exam



CAT stands for Common Admission Test conducted by Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), for admission into post graduate management programs offered in many institutes across India, apart from the IIMs. IIMs select candidates as per their performance in CAT exam, group discussion and personal interview.

Syllabus 
Although specific syllabus is not designed for CAT entrance examination, the questions testing the candidate’s arithmetical problem solving ability, data interpretation, logical reasoning, and English language skills (Grammar & Vocabulary) can be asked. The questions related to geometry, algebra and statistics are also included. The entrance examination tests the aptitude of the scholar for managerial skills.

Arithmetic 
Number Systems and Number Theory, Percentages, Simple & Compound Interest, Speed, Profit and Loss, Time and Distance, Pipes and Cisterns, Races, Averages, Ratio, Proportion, Mixtures and Alligations

Algebra  
Linear and Quadratic Equation, Binomial Theorem, Inequalities, Logarithm, Progressions - AP, GP, HP, Permutation & Combination, Probability, Function and Set Theory.   
 
Geometry
Co ordinate Geometry, Lines, Angles, Triangles, Spheres, Rectangles, Cube, Cone etc, Trigonometry and Mensuration are asked in the question paper.
 
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
Questions comprising tables and bar graphs, column graphs, pie chart, graphs representing area, line charts, venn diagram etc are usually asked in this section. Apart from these, questions on Critical reasoning, Visual reasoning, Assumption- Premise-Conclusion, Assertion and reasons, Statements and assumptions, identifying valid inferences , Matrix arrangements, Statements and conclusions, Cause and Effect, identifying next number in series, Identifying Probably true, Probably false, definitely true, definitely false kind of statement, Linear arrangements, Sequencing, Puzzles, Family tree problem, identifying Strong arguments and Weak arguments, Symbol Based problems, Coding and decoding, etc. can also be expected.
 
Reading Comprehension
This section includes passage and Poems
 
Verbal Ability
Verbal reasoning, syllogisms, Analogies, Antonyms, Fill In the Blanks, odd man out, idioms, one word substitution, Jumbled paragraphs with 4 or 5 sentences, Jumbled paragraphs (6 sentences with first and last fixed), Sentence Correction, Sentence completion, contextual usage, Sentence correction, Foreign language words used in English, Different usage of same word etc.  
 
Current Affairs
Questions from current affairs are also included in the exam. For that one can study competitive books, newspapers, magazines etc. one should know the punch line, name of the Top officials of reputed companies, Major corporate events, Famous award and prizes, Books and authors, Science, History, Geography, International organizations, important quotations, Social issues, World Records, Sports, Finance, Automobiles, Entertainment, Politics etc.
 
Group Discussion & Personal Interview (GDPI)
Students who have appeared in CAT exam and have scored the qualifying marks are then called for group discussion and personal interview as well. In order to prepare for GDPI, the students should have up-to-date knowledge on various aspects of Economics, Business and Technology.
