The Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur is located in Howrah, West Bengal. It is considered one of the top Universities in West Bengal. Since the time of British Raj, the journey from Bishop's College to Bengal Engineering College in the independent India has not been an easy one. The 150 year old institution is the second oldest one in the whole of India.

From 1865 to 1879, The Bengal Engineering and Science University functioned as the Civil Engineering Department of the Presidency College. It was later, in 1880 that the College shifted to its new and permanent home at the green campus at Bishop's College, Howrah. The name was subsequently changed to 'Bengal Engineering College' in the year 1921.

The Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur is approved by the AICTE, New Delhi. It offers various courses both in Undergraduate and Postgraduate streams of engineering. It is situated in the beautiful surrounding on the western bank of the river Hooghly, which is just opposite the city of Kolkata.

This College also holds the pride of being the fourth oldest engineering College in India, just behind the College of Engineering, Guindy, IIT Roorkee and the College of Engineering, Pune. At first, when it was founded, the main aim of the College was to impart engineering education to the students. Every year students from this institution form a large intake of the administration, management and technology sector in both India and abroad.

Initially, the institution was known as Bishop's College. Later, in the year 1856, the College came to be known as the Calcutta Civil Engineering College. At that time there were only 10 students and very few teaching staff. From 12th February, 1920, the name of the College was changed o the present Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur or B.E. College, Shibpur. It also remained a constituent College from May 1857 to 1992 under the University of Calcutta. The College, in 1992 was given the Deemed University status.

Eligibility

Undergraduate Courses: To be eligible for the Undergraduate Courses, a student must have completed their 10+2 (Intermediate) level or equivalent examination successfully with 60% or above marks; with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics as optional subjects.

Postgraduate Courses: To be eligible for the Postgraduate Courses at the Bengal Engineering And Science University, Shibpur, a student must have obtained a B.E./B.Tech. or an equivalent degree with atleast 60% marks in aggregate.

Ph.D Courses: To be eligible for the Doctoral Level Courses, a student must have a Master's Degree with valid GATE/ NET scores.

Admission

Undergraduate Courses: Admissions to the Bachelor of Engineering Programmes at the Bengal Engineering And Science University, Shibpur are made on the basis of the results of the AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Examination), which is conducted by the CBSE on an All India level.

Postgraduate Courses: The student seeking admission to the Postgraduate Courses has to qualify a written test and in interview conducted by the University.

Ph.D Programmes: The admissions to Ph.D Courses are made on the basis of written test and/ or interview which is conducted at the Institute. Also, note that students must have NET (UGC/CSIR) scores with them, if they seek admission to Ph.D Programmes.
