IIT Roorkee is one of the top engineering institutes of the world. The
institute was established in 1847 by the Britishers as Thomason college
of Civil Engineering. The institute was rechristened as University of
Roorkee in 1949 and was given the status of the First Engineering
University of Independent India.
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee has played a crucial role in
research and in providing technical manpower and expertise to the
country. On September 21, 2001, the Government of India issued an
ordinance and declared the institute as the nation's seventh Indian
Institute of Technology. The ordinance was converted into an act by the
Parliament to make IIT Roorkee an "Institution of National
Importance".
IIT Roorkee offers Bachelor degree courses in 10 disciplines of
Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate degrees in 55 disciplines
of Engineering, Applied Sciences, Architecture and Planning. The
engineering department of the institute include: Architecture, Chemical
Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering,
Earthquake Engineering (offers post-graduate level courses only),
Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering,
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials
Engineering, and Pulp and Paper Engineering.
The pure science departments of IIT Roorkee include: Chemistry,
Mathematics, Physics, and Earth Sciences. IIT Roorkee also has five
specialized centers. These are: Biotechnology, Hydrology (affiliated to
National Institute of Hydrology), Water Resources Development and
Management, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Management Studies.
IIT Roorkee has academic collaboration with the top universities of the
world, such as University of Texas, National University of Singapore,
University of Waterloo, and Royal Institute of Technology
(KTH),Stockholm.
