The Government College of Engineering, Pune is located
in Maharashtra (Pune). Pune is known as the historically educational and
cultural capital of Maharashtra. The Govt. College of Engineering, Pune
is one of the premier educational institutions of the country today.
Established in the year 1854, it is a very well known and highly reputed
institute for engineering education.
The Government College of Engineering Pune came into being in the year
1854 and is one of the oldest and well known engineering institutions.
Initially it was known as the Poona Engineering class and Mechanical
school and was basically used to train subordinate officers for carrying
out public work. But, later on the school became Poona Civil Engineering
College and finally in the year 1911, the name was changed to the
present Government College of Engineering, Pune.
The first batch of students to complete the degree courses from the
college was in the year 1912. Subsequently, in the years 1914 and 1932,
degree courses in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering were
introduced. Later, after India attained its independence degree courses
in Metallurgy and Telecommunication were started. In 1965, the degree
course in Instrumentation was added. The recent additions to the College
are: Degree courses in Computer Engineering in 1992 and Production
Engineering in 1995. The college also offers sixteen Postgraduate
courses, first of which started in the year 1957. All the Undergraduate
and Postgraduate Courses of the College are approved by the All India
Council for Technical Education.
