IIT JAM

IIT JAM is the acronym for Joint Admission Test to M.Sc. It is a common admission test conducted by one of the seven IITs for admission to 2-year M.Sc programs in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at all IITs; and 3-year post-B.Sc programmes (MCA, M.Tech in Applied Geology / Applied Geophysics) at IIT Roorkee, and M.Sc.- Ph.D dual degree programme in Physics at IIT Kanpur and IIT Bombay.

Eligibility: The eligibility for various courses offered through IIT JAM test is as follows:

MSc Biotechnology: Bachelor's degree in any branch of Science/ Agriculture/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary/ Engineering/ Medicine (MBBS).

MSc Chemistry: Bachelor's degree with Chemistry as a subject for three years / six semesters and Mathematics in Class XII.

MSc Applied Geology/ MSc Geological Sciences/ M Tech Applied Geology: Bachelor's degree with Geology as a subject for three years/ six semesters and any two of the followings subjects: Mathematics/ Physics/ Chemistry/ Biological Science. The candidate must have Mathematics at 10+2 level.

MSc Geophysics: Bachelors degree with any two of Physics, Mathematics and Geology for at least two years / four semesters and the third one for at least one year / two semesters.

MSc Applied Geophysics/ M Tech Applied Geophysics: Bachelor's degree with Mathematics and Physics and any one of the following subjects: Chemistry/ Geology/ Statistics/ Electronics/ Computer Science.

MSc Mathematics/ MSc Applied Mathematics/ MSc Industrial Mathematics and Informatics: Bachelor's degree with Mathematics as a subject for at least two years/ four semesters.

MSc Physics / MSc - PhD Dual Degree Programme in Physics: Bachelor's degree with Physics as a subject for three years/ six semesters and Mathematics for at least two years / four semesters.

M.Sc. Applied Statistics & Informatics / M.Sc. Statistics & Informatics / M.Sc. Statistics / M.Sc. Mathematics & Computing: Bachelor's degree with either Mathematics or Statistics as a subject for at least two years / four semesters.

Master of Computer Application (MCA): Bachelor's degree with Mathematics as a subject for at least one year for annual system candidates / at least two papers of Mathematics for semester system candidates.

JAM Test Pattern: The duration of JAM test paper is 3 hours. Biotechnology and Master of Computer Application (MCA) test papers are fully objective type and consist of multiple choice questions with four alternative answers for each question.

Test Papers for Chemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Mathematical Statistics, Mathematics and Physics are a mix of objective and subjective type questions. Objective type questions form 30% weightage of the question paper. There is negative marking for wrong answers in case of objective type questions. One-third of the marks assigned to correct answer are deducted for every wrong answer.
