BITS Pilani (Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani) was
founded by late Mr G.D. Birla, an eminent industrialist in early 1900s.
At that time it was a small school and today it has blossomed into a set
of colleges for higher education, ranging from the Humanities to
Engineering. In 1964, all these colleges were amalgamated to culminate
into a unique Indian University of International standing. The Institute
was christened as the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani,
i.e. BITS, Pilani and was accorded the status of deemed university. BITS
Pilani also has campuses at Goa, Dubai, and Hyderabad.
Academic programs offered by BITS Pilani are:
Integrated First Degree Programmes: These degrees are offered at
the first tier and have nomenclature like B.E. (Hons.), B.Pharm.
(Hons.), M.M.S (Master of Management Studies), M.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc.
(Tech.), and M.A. (Hons.). These are called integrated degrees because
they have several common courses like basic math and science amongst
these degrees, and no intermediate degree, like, B.Sc., B.Sc. (Hons.),
B.A., B.A. (Hons), etc. is awarded. All these programs are spread over
eight semesters but BITS Pilani allows a student the flexibility to
finish his/her programme earlier or later than 8 semesters. Admissions
to Integrated first degree programmes, both at Pilani campus and Goa
campus, is through a computer based online test conducted by BITS. This
test is referred to as ' BITS Admission Test', in short as BITSAT.
Higher Degree Programmes: These include M.E., M.Pharm., and MBA
degrees. The duration of these programs is 3 semesters. Admissions to
these programmes are made on the basis of test and interviews conducted
by BITS, Pilani.
Besides the above programmes, BITS Pilani also offers on-campus and
off-campus Ph.D. programmes.
