National Institute of Design (NID) Ahmedabad is one of the premier
multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design education and
research. NID is a pioneer in industrial design education after Bauhaus
and Ulm in Germany. NID Ahmedabad functions as an autonomous body under
the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. The main
campus of NID is in Ahmedabad and the institute also has centers in
Bangalore and Delhi.
Academic programs offered by National Institute of Design
The institute offers 4-year Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD)
and 2 to 2 -1/2 year Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (PGDPD).
Graduate Diploma Programme in Design: The program assists
students in developing attitudes and sensorial skills, necessary for
further specialization in specific areas of design. The program starts
with a two-semester Foundation Programme. The foundation program
inculcates the development of values, attitudes, material and sensorial
skills also makes students appreciate the multidisciplinary nature of
design. The 4-year undergraduate design programme is offered in
following three steams: (1) Communication Design, (2) Industrial Design,
and (3) Textile and Apparel Design.
Those who have passed or are appearing for Higher Secondary examination
are eligible for GDPD. Upper age limit for candidates is 20 years
(relaxable by 3 years for reserved categories) as on 1st of June in the
year of admission.
Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Design: Post Graduate Diploma
Programme in Design with duration varying from 2 to 2½ years is
offered in 17 design disciplines under the three faculties.
