St. Xavier's College Calcutta
One of the most esteemed educational institutions of
present day Kolkata; the St. Xavier's College is named after St. Francis
Xavier, a saint of the 16th century. It is affiliated to the Calcutta
University. It also has the prestige of being the first autonomous
college of West Bengal. The St. Xavier College, Calcutta aims at the
formation of today's youth by helping them to become men and women of
character, and inspiring in them zeal to succeed in every field. It
offers both undergraduate and postgraduate course, under the following
five modules, namely:
It was on 16th January, 1860 that the college was
founded by the Society of Jesus or the Jesuits under the leadership of
Father Depelchin. It was a very small beginning with just about 40
students spread over three classes. In 1862, two years after it was
founded, it was affiliated to the Calcutta University. Some great men
have always been the alumni of this college. Names like Rabindranath
Tagore and Jagdish Chandra Bose come to mind instantly while mentioning
about St. Xavier's College. All the various departments of the college
became co-educational except for the B.Com department.
What started as a pure Arts College, is today one of the top Commerce colleges of India. The B.Ed courses were also introduced in 1940s while the B.Com courses were introduced in 1946. The St. Xavier College, Calcutta also has a computer center which was added later on, in 1985. Apart from the Calcutta University, it is also accredited to IGNOU and DOEAC, to conduct their respective courses. The college entered into its first ever tie-up with a foreign University, the University of Manitoba on 4th February, 2008. Certificate and Diploma Courses
Eligibility For admissions to the Bachelor's Degree programs, the student must have completed his/her Class XIIth successfully in the specified field. For admissions to the Master's Degree programs, the student must have completed his/her Bachelor's Degree program in the same field in which they want to pursue Masters. For Bachelor of Business Administration, the students need to take an admission test based on which the college gives admission. Admission Admissions to the Under-graduate programs like B.A, B.Com, and BBA are announced after the ISC/CBSE/WECHSE results are declared. Similarly, the details of Post-graduate admission to M.Sc. (Comp.Sc.), M.Sc.(Physics) and M.Com. are generally announced in the 1st week of May every year.
